George Dillow, aged 10.
When George’s grandad Michael Arslantas passed away aged 72, on the 17th January this year, after battling with pancreatic cancer it would have been easy to do nothing, but George decided to do something. He wanted to thank St Michael’s Hospice, in Basingstoke, for their kindness and support for his “Popa” during his time of need.
Michael’s health deteriorated dramatically in the final two months of his life and George had to watch his dear Popa, go from an active person, out walking the dogs, taking him and his brother Charlie to the park, and running errands for neighbours to a frail man who could hardly breathe, let alone walk.
When Popa finally passed away at the Hospice, surrounded by family, George decided that he wanted to do something positive, firstly to thank the hospice, but also to mark Popa’s life. Popa was a giver and was always on hand to help out, so George wanted to give something back to the hospice to thank them for their help.
George is a member of the Basingstoke Bluefins Swimming Club and thought that a sponsored swim would be a good idea.
With the help of Janette Osborne at the Aquadrome, a lane was reserved for his swimming challenge, a 2,500 metre swim or 100 lengths, and through his Just Giving site www.JustGiving.com/GeorgeDillow he has managed to raise over £1100 for the hospice.
The charity swim was totally his idea, he thought of it, and he wanted to do something for the local hospice.
It would have been so easy to do nothing during this difficult emotional time, but George decided to do something positive, something to focus on, and in a way help the rest of the family grieve through his sponsored swim.
He has already received a headteacher’s award from Hook Junior school for his fundraising efforts.
Well Done You George!
